The Director of Institutional Effectiveness (DIE) leads and provides oversight of academic and institutional data systems and reporting, and leads program compliance, student learning assessment, and faculty and academic leadership development. Reporting to the Provost, the DIE interacts with the leadership and faculty of academic departments, units, colleges, and schools as well as state and federal agencies to promote, lead, and support institutional effectiveness and other institutional initiatives related to academic programs and faculty. The DIE leads the Office of Academic Assessment and the Center for Faculty Excellence, and coordinates BGSU’s Accreditation (institutional and program accreditation), Program Review, and State Authorization initiatives, and leads and supports initiatives to enhance faculty and faculty administrators’ professional and leadership development.  The DIE advises the Provost, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Deans, and the Academic Affairs Council on current and future issues; and collaborates/influences across divisions and colleges on topics and initiatives related to the academic programs and faculty development at BGSU.

Institutional Effectiveness

  • Plans and serves as the academic lead to improve the integrity of the institutional and academic data and data systems (Faculty 180, Canvas, and Academic Performance Solutions).
  • Evaluates program quality and ensures continuous improvement of the institution and academic programs (Higher Learning Commission), all specialized academic program accreditation, and program reviews.
  • Serves on institutional planning and advisory committees that guide executive decision making (Student Assessment Committee, Data Governance Council, and Executive Sponsors) related to academic resource planning and decision making.
  • Conducts regular audits of programs and faculty to ensure compliance with state/national agencies and standards for optimal instructional performance (Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Faculty Qualification Audit, and Classification of Instructional Programs).
  • Develops, creates, and shares institutional dashboards and benchmark data to assist in academic planning at all levels (Academic Performance Solutions, Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Diversity and Inclusion).

Accreditation, Program Review and State Authorization

  • Serves as BGSU’s Academic Liaison Officer for national accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission.
  • Establishes annual accreditation schedule and activities (consultations with academic departments, establishes timelines, review drafts/data collection/methodology, and identifies potential issues prior to site visits) and serves as institutional advisor during the process.
  • Monitors and oversees BGSU’s compliance with State Authorization Reciprocity (SARA), the U.S. Department of Education initiative requiring academic program compliance/eligibility for enrolling distance and online students; serves as primary contact between BGSU and regional compacts and member states.

Center for Faculty Excellence

  • Leads and supports instructional transformation by offering and evaluating the impact of faculty professional development to increase student success and learning.
  • Provides professional development workshops, consultations, web resources, and learning communities designed to help those involved in teaching to create an engaged and articulate learning experience for all BGSU students (Re-imagining Our Teaching initiative, National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity).
  • Leads and coordinates instructional efforts to promote and support academic leadership opportunities at BGSU.

Academic Assessment

  • Assesses, shares, and uses assessment data (University Learning Outcomes, Program Learning Outcomes, BG Perspective) to improve student success and learning at BGSU. Facilitates the distribution of surveys of students, faculty, and staff and/or submits data for institutional/national surveys (National survey of Student Engagement, Graduate Survey, and course evaluation), ensures that units/departments participate/comply with internal and external assessment requests to meet University benchmarking and evaluation activities.
  • Serves as a campus-wide resource on assessment and consults with individuals and offices on developing appropriate goals, objectives and assessment measures.

Leadership, Mentorship and Consultation

  • Consults and/or researches, as needed, with the Provost and other University Leadership on existing and emerging issues as identified/assigned.
  • Serves on standing and ad hoc committees that support the goals and mission of the Division of Academic Affairs and the Office of the Provost.
  • Serves as a campus-wide resource on assessment and institutional accreditation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree required, doctorate preferred in Education, Psychology, Statistics, Business, Analytics, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.  Successful candidate must have Master’s degree conferred at the time of application. 

The following experience is required:

  • 5 years' experience in higher education managing institutional accreditation efforts or academic program reviews
  • 5 years' experience supervision, which can include supervision of graduate assistants
  • 5 years' experience working with large data sets and interpreting data


Preferred Experience:

  • In an administrative role in higher education or related setting
  • With student learning outcomes assessment
  • With college-level teaching/instruction
  • Developing in-service, professional development, and other training programs for educators
  • Evaluating teaching of students
  • With accrediting bodies/organizations and academic program reviews
  • In the evaluation of degree and program effectiveness



Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 360. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
