The Coordinator of the Spirit Program and Head Cheerleading Coach is an administrative staff position that has primary responsibility to provide oversight, leadership, expertise, and advisement to campus-wide spirit initiatives as well as to serve as the Head Coach for the Cheerleading Team.  The Spirit Program also consists of the Mascots, Dance Team, SICSIC, BGSU Bucket List, Falcon Fridays, and various additional spirit and tradition initiatives; and this position meets with prospective and current students who have an interest in the Spirit Program, coordinates tryout and selection processes, facilitates strength and skills trainings, and choreographs cheer performances.  The Coordinator must possess excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills, as well as serve as a positive role model for students through ethical and professional conduct.

  • Direct activities, such as practices and workouts, as well as serve as an athletic instructor for cheerleaders and dance team members by teaching proper skills while promoting student safety and wellbeing.  Provide a student development focused co-curricular experience for participants that focuses on academic excellence, leadership, teamwork, University traditions, and diversity and belonging.
  • Plan and execute University-wide programs and events (e.g., Falcon Fridays, BG Bucket List, Pep Rallies, and Traditions Tours) that foster school spirit and pride among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. 
  • Collaborate with Intercollegiate Athletics staff and the director of the Falcon Marching Band concerning game day performances and travel, as well as other campus constituents concerning programs and events to enhance school spirit.
  • Engage program alumni through regular communications and signature events (e.g., Homecoming) as well as support the creation and ongoing operations of a Spirit Program Affinity Group and Mascot Affinity Group.
  • Supervise the assistant dance coach and any assigned student interns/employees.
  • Recruit program participants by engaging with prospective and current students and their families.
  • Develop an annual operating budget for the program, expend funds in accordance with University policies, and reconcile expenses in a timely and error-free manner.  Maintain and inventory supplies and uniforms and place orders for needed items.
  • Coordinate fundraising opportunities to support student travel and participation in annual national competition events as well to advance the overall Spirit Program.
  • Provide assistance and support to colleagues within the Division of Diversity and Belonging, participate and represent the Division and Department on committees and at official functions, and complete other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required.  Degree must be conferred at the time of application.

 

The following experience is required:

  • 2 years of cheerleading team coaching experience                                         
  • 1 year experience working with college students                                              

 

The following experience is preferred:

  • 1 year budget development/management experience                                       
  • 1 year experience working with mascots                                                         
  • 1 year experience with fundraising efforts                                                       
  • 1 year experience with alumni engagement                                                     
  • 1 year experience planning events and programs

 

Licenses, Certification or Registrations

  • American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) Certification – must be renewed every two years

 


Salary

 

Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 353. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Knowledge of cheerleading skills, gymnastics, tumbling, dance, co-ed stunting, and all-female stunting in a collegiate environment
  • Knowledge and experience working in student affairs or an athletic department
  • Proven ability to work effectively and establish and maintain relationships with students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, athletes, coaches, athletics staff,  administrators, and community members
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of AACCA rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of Mid-American Conference and League rules
  • Record of ability to develop and manage financial resources, including budget development and management
  • Knowledge and experience in fundraising
  • Computer competencies with Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Evidence of organizational skills, including the ability to organize tasks, set and accomplish priorities and goals, and evaluate continuous progress toward goals
  • Ability to analyze data to develop comprehensive reports, draw conclusions, and make recommendations
  • Aptitude in directing activities of large groups to accomplish a goal
  • Ability to demonstrate and clearly explain cheer/dance skills to students
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex situations and issues
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse campus populations
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to function successfully in a fast-paced, often changing environment
