The Program Coordinator is part of the student support team within Nontraditional and Military Student Services and a member of the broad team of professional academic student support staff at the University.  Under the direction of the immediate supervisor and in accordance with university strategies, the Program Coordinator provides essential support and service to nontraditional and military students and contributes to the university’s goals of supporting student access, persistence and retention to timely graduation. The Program Coordinator is responsible for enhancing and administering the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program to support university and state goals to increase adult learner degree attainment.

Among the primary responsibilities of the Program Coordinator are to provide comprehensive academic support and guidance to degree attainment for nontraditional students. Most nontraditional students begin or return to higher education having achieved college level learning outside of the traditional college classroom. The Program Coordinator will work with individual students, as well as with faculty and staff to facilitate recognition of potential college credits to be evaluated through the Prior Learning Assessment process. Nontraditional students or adult learners beginning or returning to college face many challenges and the Program Coordinator will coordinate efforts to support adult student success recognizing and providing resources to this student population.


Prior Learning Assessment

  • Develop and maintain contact with faculty, staff, and administration to operationalize use of Prior Learning Assessment, Competency Based Education, and support effective adult learner support practices.
  • Manage Prior Learning Assessment program by increasing awareness and utilization of the variety of PLA tools including use of national exams such as CLEP and Dantes; Credit by Exam within the university, Credit by Validation for external training, credit via Portfolio Review and credit for standardized industry credentials.
  • Develop additional outreach mechanisms to increase student participation in the PLA process.
  • Track student progress through the PLA process and provide timely feedback to both students and faculty.
  • Development and delivery of PLA professional develop sessions for the university community.
  • Create reports to track and assess the PLA program.
  • Research current best practices and innovations for PLA.


Student Support and Retention

  • Provides academic support as a program advisor, assisting nontraditional students to access resources that address the many challenges and barriers to overall college success.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources within BGSU and non-BGSU support offices and/or organizations as needed to support student success.
  • Review student academic progress and performance leading to recommendations for students on specific actions to enhance academic and career goals.
  • Assess incoming nontraditional and military student transcripts and experiences for prior college level learning credits that apply to degree completion as part of the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program. This includes Credit by Exam, Credit by Validation, credit by Portfolio, credit by Industry Credential and review of work and life experiences for possible academic credit.
  • Plan and implement Nontraditional Orientation and other adult learner focused support activities, as well events on- and off-campus to support prospective adult students as they contemplate how college will fit into their already challenging lives. (Events may include outreach at business and industry locations, and other specialized events.  May include evenings and/or weekends)
  • Responsible for developing programming efforts and intervention strategies for nontraditional/adult learner students, a known at-risk population.
  • May be responsible for advising a specific population/cohort of students, requiring additional specialized knowledge and skills; such as those students pursuing PLA.


  • Manage student support caseload through the utilization of online/digital and analog administrative programs and processes utilizing Navigate and CSS.
  • Maintain and update student files and records in accordance with federal, state and university regulations.
  • Coordinate annual scholarship process to award numerous nontraditional scholarships to students and maintain appropriate records and communication.
  • Additional department specific duties and responsibilities as assigned


Additional Duties

  • Participate and successfully complete initial and on-going training and professional development at the university and departmental level. Topics may be related to academic advising practice and philosophy; university and college policies, procedures and resources; desktop/web-based software and systems; and other related skills and abilities to enhance professional practice and support student success.
  • Explore and provide information to university leadership about other opportunities that may impact nontraditional;/adult learner degree completion such as Competency Based Education (CBE), stackable certificates, apprenticeship to degree pathways, and the role of industry/university partnerships.
  • May lead and/or participate in research activities related to PLA, CBE and adult learner success efforts.
  • May be responsible for developing programming that implements state-initiatives related to adult-learner success.
  • Other specific duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree required in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Guidance and Counseling or other related academic discipline. Successful candidate must have degree conferred at the time of application.

The following experience is required:

  • 1-2 years of Prior Learning Assessment and/or academic advising experience or experience in another college functional area with direct student contact





Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 354. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
