Academic and Career Planning Specialist

The Academic and Career Planning Specialists are part of the team of academic and career planning staff at the University. Under the direction of the immediate supervisor and in accordance with university advising, career, and student success strategies, these Specialists provide essential support and service to students and contribute to the university’s goals of promoting student development and success, including persistence, timely graduation, and career preparedness.

The primary responsibilities of the Academic and Career Planning Specialists are to provide degree planning, academic, and career guidance to undergraduate students through one-on-one and group consultations and presentations for a variety of academic disciplinary clusters. The Specialists also provide career guidance to graduate students and alumni. Additionally, these Specialists will participate and assist with various university retention efforts, serve on university and departmental committees and work groups, and participate in training and development.

Academic Planning and Progress

  • Develop, modify, and maintain academic degree completion plans for both incoming and current students within an assigned disciplinary cluster, providing guidance on course planning, degree requirements, university policies and procedures, and class registration procedures
  • Work collaboratively with students regarding registration and course enrollment
  • Collaborate with Design Coaches and colleagues from other campus offices to connect students to resources that facilitate student success and connectedness within their program of study
  • Educate students on university and academic program policies and procedures
  • Review transcripts from students who have changed their majors or transferred in from another institution
  • May conduct group advising sessions with designated advising groups or segments of students
  • Assist students with academic appeals
  • Regularly review student academic progress and performance and advise students on development and/or modification of degree completion plans
  • Refer students to appropriate BGSU and non-BGSU support offices and/or organizations as needed to support student success
  • May be responsible for developing programming efforts and intervention strategies for targeted and identified populations of at-risk students

Career Development and Planning

  • Provide individual and group consultations on career-related topics such as cover letter and resume reviews, Handshake profile support, experiential learning and job search strategies, and graduate school search preparations
  • Review and approve or decline resumes and other professional student and alumni documents in the online recruitment system
  • Generate student interest and submissions for the Falcon Career Spotlights to highlight student and alumni career success stories
  • Review and analyze career assessment results with students
  • Promote experiential learning, part-time and full-time employment opportunities that benefit students and alumni
  • Provide staffing support at job fairs and other large, institutional recruitment events
  • Create and facilitate classroom and student organization presentations on career-related topics
  • Design and maintain electronic career-related resources for student and alumni use, including, but not limited to, What Can I Do With A Major In… and the Career Resource Guide
  • Support student participation and progress in career-related programs including the Falcon Internship Guarantee and Choose Ohio First grant
  • Document communication with students and alumni to maintain accurate and timely notes


  • Utilize current and emerging technology and available data to complete essential duties, processes, and communication with students to support and foster retention, persistence, and success (e.g. Big Interview, CSS/MyBGSU, GoinGlobal, Navigate, Handshake, degree audit, schedule planning, SharePoint, Query, etc.)
  • Maintain and manage caseload and student lists through the utilization of online/digital administrative programs and processes
  • Document appointments and communications, and maintain and update student files and records in accordance with federal, state and university regulations
  • May conduct, complete and report audits related to student academic progress toward degree completion, eligibility, and fulfillment of requirements to achieve graduation clearance (may include NCAA, Financial Aid, ROTC and other scholarship programs)

Additional Duties

  • Develop and maintain contact with faculty, staff, and administration as needed to support effective academic and career advising practices
  • Participate and successfully complete initial and on-going training and professional development.
  • Participate in planning and goal setting to meet performance expectations and metrics
  • Complete other and additional duties and responsibilities, as assigned



Minimum Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree.  Successful candidate must have Bachelor’s degree conferred at the time of application.        

Preferred: Master’s degree in college counseling, higher education, or related field; experience teaching in a higher education setting.

The following experience is required:

  • 1-2 years of work experience in an educational or non-profit setting with a preference in advising, coaching, counseling, mentoring, or teaching. or 2 years graduate assistantship experience with direct student contact.


Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 354.  Salary is commensurate with education and experience.  Full benefit package available.

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn design thinking concepts, student development theories, and career development theories

  • Effective in working with diverse populations
