Substance Use Disorder Counselor

As a member of the Counseling Center clinical staff, this position provides comprehensive alcohol and other drug prevention and early intervention services for the University. These services include mental health consultation and assessment, outreach, and education on related topics for BGSU and the community.  This position also provides general mental health services to students, which includes individual, group and couples therapy. 


  • Intervention services: Student screening and assessments, recommendations, education, support and counseling. Documentation of clinical services.
  • Case Management: Staffing, letters and coordination of service from referral sources such as BG probation, ODOS and Residence Life staff, Athletics and other referral sources.
  • Prevention services: Outreach and education which includes programs for student classes and presentations for faculty, staff and community on a variety of substance use and mental health related topics.
  • Training: Provide direct and indirect clinical supervision to unlicensed clinicians and conduct periodic training seminars for professional and training staff in areas of personal expertise.


Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling or related field. Degree must be obtained at the time of application.

The following experience is required:

  • Minimum of 1-year experience in alcohol and other drug assessment, education and counseling, which can include a supervised internship. 
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in the provision of mental health services, which can include a supervised internship.


Required Licensure:

  • Licensed Professional Counselor or Counselor Trainee license. To be considered with Counselor Trainee status, the candidate must have passed the National Counselor Examination and be eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor by start date.



Full-time, Administrative staff position available.  Administrative Grade Level 354.  Salary is commensurate with education and experience  Full benefit package available.


Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Must possess mental health and substance abuse treatment experience.
