FACULTY ADMINISTRATOR VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT:   Director of School of Aviation

Bowling Green State University is searching for a Director of the School of Aviation, qualified rank 12-month faculty position in the College of Technology, Architecture, and Applied Engineering with a start date of January, 2023. The Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction, managing the operation and programs related to the school, coordinating curricular development and accreditation, and identifying and developing industry partnerships.  The Director is responsible for interacting with the Bowling Green Flight Center (BGFC) and is responsible for aviation safety management. The aviation programs at BGSU are accredited by Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI).  The past few years have shown explosive growth in the aviation program at BGSU.  The School now has approximately 400 students divided between its flight training and aviation management programs.

The College of Technology is undergoing a major transformation by creating a School of Aviation.  The current  B.S. in Aviation with two tracks, Flight Technology Operations and Aviation Management Operations, are in the process of being converted into two separate B.S. programs with an expected start date in Fall 2023.  The Bowling Green Flight Center and Airport are located on campus.  Since 2014, the Bowling Green Flight Center has constructed over 40,000 square feet of new facilities, purchased new aircraft, and employs over 70 part-time and full-time staff to support the aviation program.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbent.
 
Strategic Leadership:
The Director serves as the strategic leader of the School and is forward-looking, results-oriented, seeks continuous improvement and maintains positive morale within the Programs. The Director will support the development and alignment of the School of Aviation’s strategic plan to align with the College, and University Strategic plans. The Director performs situation analysis for planning and program updating purposes to include comparisons of peer and aspirant programs for benchmarking.  
 
Program Management:
The Director, working with the faculty, will assess all program educational goals, student learning outcomes, and pursue continuous improvement as part of AABI accreditation requirements.   The Director will evaluate and maintain a current and relevant curricula for academic programing within the School and maintain compliance with applicable  FAA, Veterans Administration and university requirements and regulations.
 
Personnel Evaluation Support:
The Director supports the Dean in assigning workload to school faculty consistent with the BGSU Academic Charter and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).  The Director performs faculty merit and retention, promotion, and tenure evaluations. The Director works with the faculty to develop faculty success plans. The Director is involved in the hiring and faculty and onboarding of adjunct faculty. 
 
Hiring and Review of Ground School Instructors:
Ground school instructors are employees or contractors for BGSU. The Director, in consultation with the Dean, conducts searches and assesses the performance of BGSU ground school instructors.
 
Teaching Aviation Courses:
The Director will teach aviation courses at a partial faculty load approved by the Dean. 
 
External Relations:
The Director will organize and help lead, in collaboration with the faculty, the industry advisory board and coordinate and promote external relations.   
 
Analysis and Review of Flight Technology Operations (FTO) Contractor Performance:
The Director, in coordination with the college Dean, will be responsible for analyzing and reviewing flight training contractor (North Star) performance for the BGSU Flight Technology and Operations program. Examples include:
Evaluation of North Star’s flight training performance.
Evaluation and checks of student flight record keeping and student performance.
Student advocate to promote student success and graduation.
Leadership, evaluation and compliance of the BGSU and North Star safety program.
Review of North Star requests for flight fee increases.
Safety management
Contract Compliance
Other as needed
 
Safety Management:
The Director oversees the Aviation Safety Management System in coordination with faculty, staff, BGFC, and the BGSU office of safety and risk management.  The Director is the chair of the Aviation Safety Quality Committee. The Director is responsible for ensuring the safety procedures manual is updated, and that the Safety Management Systems (SMS) Manual provides a strategic framework for Aviation Safety. The Director must ensure that the Safety Management System meets accreditation requirements. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned Master’s degree in aviation or a related field.
- Professional experience (at least 5 years) in the aviation industry including safety, operations, and management with demonstrated leadership experience.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in aviation-related fields such as Aviation/Aerospace Management, Aviation/Aerospace Operations, Aviation/Aerospace Safety Management or similar.
- At least 5 years of academic experience in any university-level aviation program
- Clear understanding of FAA rules and regulations measured by having a pilot/dispatcher certification, or ground instructor certification, chief flight instructor, or other significant industry experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience (5 or more years).
- Excellent written, presentation, analytical and interpersonal communication skills.
 
Salary & Benefits
Full-time (12 month) salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full benefits package available.
