The Director of Multicultural Affairs provides leadership and supervision for the development and implementation of retention programs for diverse student populations, multicultural programs, diversity education, and programs for the department to promote diversity and inclusion on campus and in the surrounding community. The Director is responsible for overseeing the budget and daily operations of the department and leading internal and external collaborations and partnerships. The Director is responsible for chairing the Student Affairs Diversity Committee, and providing leadership for diversity training for faculty, staff, students and the local community.

  • Department Leadership: Directs, plans, and implements plans to support the mission, objectives and goals of the Office of Multicultural Affairs by supervising staff and providing regular feedback, assigning work and providing regular evaluation of work. Direct and lead the retention initiatives for specially targeted student populations, diversity education and multicultural programming of the department and the functions and programs of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Resource Center. Provide strategic direction, including assessment to support the division and institutional goals and priorities. Outreach to community and alumni base.
  • Direct and Oversee Diversity Education:  Oversee the diversity education of faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community using relevant models that follow trends and best practices centered on diversity education in Higher Education settings. Supervise the other diversity education and diversity initiatives of the campus and programs of the department such as the OMA Ambassadors, Safe Zone Training, Black Issues Conference, etc. Recruit and provide ongoing training for diversity workshop facilitators.
  • Student Success: Develop and promote student academic achievement, career aspiration, and personal development opportunities. Advise student groups (such as Black Student Union, Latino Student Union, Queer Trans Student Union, etc.) as appropriate. Develop and oversee the retention courses and programs of the department. Oversee department assessments of programs and services. Provide feedback to staff regarding assessment and student satisfaction surveys and assessments. Prepare students for life after BGSU (life, career, profession schools, and success)
  • Budget: Oversee the budgets for retention, diversity education and cultural programs offered by the department. Oversee the budget for the daily operations of the department. Determine co-sponsorship amounts for student organizations and other departments and groups that support diversity initiatives.
  • Service: Serve on committees Division and University-wide committees (i.e. Beyond The Dream, Not In Our Town, Task Force, etc.) and other taskforces as needed. Chair the Student Affairs Diversity Committee. Serve as a liaison and resource to other units within the University. Work in collaboration with departments, groups and organizations to implement a variety of diversity initiatives. Represent the University on the Not In Our Town Committee, Erase the Hate of Toledo, Ohio Diversity Officers Collaboration, etc. 
  • Campus Climate:  Lead efforts to create an educational community that welcomes people of different races, cultures, ages, genders, sexual orientation, religions, socioeconomic levels, political perspectives, abilities, opinions, values and experiences.  Ensure that underrepresented and marginalized groups have equal access to the education and resource opportunities available at the University.  Routinely assesses the campus climate to understand how the campus is perceived and experienced by students, faculty, and staff.  Inform and advise the VPSA regarding potential challenges and act to address and remedy concerns that emerge

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree required.  Field of study can be Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Education, Leadership, Communication or related fields of study.  Successful candidate must have Master’s degree conferred at the time of application. 

The follow experience is also required:

  • 3-5 years of experience working with diversity and diversity education programs;
  • 3-5 years executing and developing diversity education curriculum for students and staff
  • 3-5 years of experience supervising staff

 

Salary

Full-time administrative staff position available. Administrative Staff pay grade 359. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Quantitative and qualitative assessment experience. Knowledge of diversity assessment and systemic issues of diversity and inclusion.
